| News and Events (updated July 18, 2008) Thoughts from Kate How long is a minute? A minute is a long time if you are holding your breath, but it is a short time if you are trying to finish a project; - a long time when you are excitedly anticipating something good, short when you hear the phone ring and you are in the bathroom; - a long time when you are in pain, a short time when you are saying good-bye before a trip; - long time when you are calling someone and the line is busy, short when you are busy; - long when you are at a stop light, short when you are on vacation; and - long when you are bored; short when you are engaged in a lively conversation. A minute is long enough for us to give thanks to God and short enough for us to be glad we have so many minutes to fill. Planning ahead for a visit from Bishop Lee Only 2 months! Plan ahead! Mark your calendars! Bishop Lee will join us on September 21 to celebrate the Holy Eucharist, preach, confirm, receive and witness reaffirmations of our Baptismal Covenant. Sunday Morning Adult Education - The Importance of Being Foolish Most people are familiar with the song “Awesome God,” written by the late Rich Mullins. One of the questions Rich wrestled with was, “how does a Christian handle wealth and fame?” Searching for answers, he turned to Brennan Manning, author of many books, including the Raggamuffin Gospel. In Rich’s case, the result of his quest was to live in a trailer on an Indian Reservation and launch a non-profit adoption agency for underprivileged kids. In Manning’s book, “The Importance of Being Foolish,” he teaches us, similarly, how to practice what we preach, and, in doing so, explores how it’s possible for Christians to authentically live out our faith, even if in doing so, it makes us look foolish in the eyes of the world. When does this monumental task appear achievable, and, when does it seem like it's too high a mountain to climb? As we study The Importance of Being Foolish, we’ll undertake the awesome challenge that Manning presents, of learning “how to think like Jesus.” This class begins on Sunday, July 27, at 9:00 am. A sign up sheet will be available this Sunday. Please see Bill Mehr for more information. The cost of the book is $11.00. Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the books and materials. Meals to Hilda Barg Shelter Thank you to ALL who donated $$, made meals, served and donated items for the Hilda Barg Shelter last week. There were not many folks at the shelter for a change, but they were very grateful for our ministry and really liked the food. Left over money was donated to help with supplies and to provide meals if a group backs out at the last minute. We will do it all again in the winter. You can always donate to ACTs and the Drop-in Center The needs of ACTS and the Drop-In Center are still great. They can use clothing in the form of white crew socks and work/winter socks (size 11-13). They can use work jeans and even Men’s shoes and boots (sizes 10-12). They still need women’s underwear and men’s underwear (shirts and briefs). If you prefer, you could furnish cough drops or lozenges or vitamins. Please leave them in the basket on the table as you enter the church. Thank you for your generosity! |
